From MS3 to MS4: My personnal feedback
From MS3 to MS4, my first impressions.
I use MuseScore as a ‘repeater/accompanist’ for my periods of work on my instrument.
I'm not a composer and I don't work on producing new pieces or sounds.
Musescore is a tool I use to interpret scores via the MIDI channel and a sound box (Roland Integra7).
I don't use the sounds generated by the PC or by MuseScore, which for me are too ‘synthetic’.
It's a matter of taste.
My use of MuseScore therefore requires correct MIDI management.
I also make extensive use of the options offered by MS3 under the heading ‘Playback window’:
- loop repeat between markers,
- countdown at the start of playback, very useful when working with accompaniment,
- the possibility of varying playback speeds without having to modify tempo indications
- the ability to have several scores open at the same time and switch between them quickly.
I don't use the publication 'add-ons', nor all its sharing facilities, which are apparently very fashionable but not very useful for what I do. I propose to give here my feedback on the use of MS4 in this context. Maybe it will help.

Of course you need to use the version that best fits your needs. Nothing wrong with that.
In MU4...
There is a loop playback function.
No real countdown.
You can vary speed other than tempo marking.
No tab function. But you can have several scores open. I think I had 12 open at once.
You also should spend some time in the manual to find out about the above.
First attempt to use MS4.
To avoid corruption of my current set of scores, I use a copy for all score opened through MS4. So if a score works on MS3, it should work on MS4, I hope so.
First problem: Two applications instance can't open the same MIDI interface.
It's probably logic BUT with the MS4's rule to not open multiple files on the same instance, the first can manage MIDI, the second NOT. That's a big problem for me
MS3 can open multiple files on the same instance and so it can use the same MIDI interface to play back multiple partition. There is the possibility to merge score on a same file but it will be difficult to play a specific section on a piece. Say: A Vivaldi score with 4 parts 'largo' 'allegro' 'largo' 'allegro'.
Go ahead to retrieve the start point for the third movment....

Hello,
After working on a violin/cello/piano trio on MS3, I wanted to give MS4 another try.
Same piece, same instruments on the same MIDI channels. MS4 seems to work fine, and I've got the right instruments on the right channels.
I close the file and open a new one with the same instance of MS4. This time, it's a piece by J.S.Back, with two recorders and cello as continuo. And NO, the MIDI device was not updated, so it keeps 'violin/cello/piano' for the three first channel. I can see that all MIDI events come to those channel, so the playback is not OK.
So, next step. I close MS4, shutdown the MIDI device. After, relaunch MIDI device and a quick check with what is configured on the 4 first channel:
1- Full Grand Piano
2- StringsSection
3- '76 Pure
4- B3 Jazz 1
Than I relaunch MS4, reopen the Bach piece and launch the playback and nothing change on the MIDI device.
So, the first recorder is played by the Grand Piano, the second recorder by the StringSection, etc.
For me MS4 doesn't sent any configuration to the MIDI interface. MS3 , yes.
So for the moment, no way for me to work with this version of MuseScore, I will keep the version 3.7

Stefan
