TAB and Treble Clef for guitar

• Jun 27, 2025 - 04:12

I am trying to write a score for POP/Rock Guitar:

  • I want two linked notations:
    one Treble Clef
and the other Guitar Tab. (TAB)

  • I want to be able to enter a note in (say) TAB, and have that same note position appear as note on the Treble Clef line as well (and Vice versa: e.g enter in Treble Clef and have it appear in the correct TAB position as well)

Please See attached picture as an example of the final result which was achieved by entering the note on TAB and the equivalent note automatically appeared on the Treble Clef section (and v.v.)

How do I enact this procedure?

Thanks for your help, appreciated

Do not make a separate instrument for the tab, but add a linked staff to the instrument.
Then you can enter the notes either in tab or in treble clef.

To create a linked staff, click on the Layout tab (upper left, yellow highlight). Then click the little triangle immediately left of the instrument in question (green highlight) to display the sub-items (staves) of that instrument. Next to the staff of your guitar (blue highlight) click the gear button. Then click to Create a linked staff (orange highlight).

This creates an identical staff. The same type as the original. To change it to the other type staff, click on one of the staves (I usually change the second, but you may change either, or even both) and then the gear at the left (blue highlight). Then click the Staff type dropdown list (green highlight) and select from the various types of staff.

Now the two staves are linked but different types: for example, top standard and bottom tablature ... or vice versa. Enter a note in the standard notation and it will add an entry in the tab. Going in this direction it will choose the closest to the nut by default. If you enter a note in the tab, there is only one possibility of the pitch on the standard staff.

If you're new to MuseScore (?), the easiest way is to create a New score, then click on “Create from template” / Solo category / Guitar + Tablature template. By default, the Tablature is linked, so you can immediately obtain the desired result.
